존재는 그것이 머물렀던 시간과 장소를 떠난 뒤에도 완전히 사라지지 않는다. 어떤 것은 기억으로 남고, 어떤 것은 설명할 수 없는 감각으로 지속되며, 때로는 그 실체를 잃은 채 우리 안에 머문다. 이 작업은 존재와 부재 사이에 놓인 불분명한 상태, 그리고 그 경계에서 계속되는 감정에 주목한다.
사람의 형상을 연상시키는 덩어리와 신체의 일부처럼 보이는 긴 형태는 명확한 대상을 규정하지 않는다. 이들은 하나의 신체이면서 동시에 그 신체로부터 분리된 무언가이며, 살아 있는 것과 이미 사라진 것 사이의 모호한 상태를 드러낸다. 형상 안에는 서로 다른 시간과 감정이 뒤섞여 있고 무엇이 시작이고 끝인지, 무엇이 온전히 남아 있는 것인지 구분할 수 없다.
누군가의 부재는 남겨진 이들에게 또 다른 형태의 존재를 만들어낸다. 더 이상 마주할 수 없는 대상은 기억과 감정 속에서 끊임없이 변형되고, 끝맺지 못한 마음은 과거와 현재 사이를 오가며 지속된다. 애도는 부재를 받아들이는 과정인 동시에, 부재와 존재의 관계가 다른 방식으로 이어지는 시간이다. 그 안에는 상실뿐 아니라 놓아주지 못하는 마음, 사라진 후에도 소멸하지 않는 감정의 잔여가 함께 존재한다.
<존재의 잔여>는 사라진 것과 남아 있는 것, 끝난 것과 여전히 지속되는 것 사이의 관계를 탐색한다. 완전히 소멸하지도, 온전히 되돌아오지도 못한 채 어딘가에 남아 있는 것들. 그 불완전한 지속 속에서 존재는 또 다른 형태가 되고 기억은 새로운 생명력을 갖는다. 보이지 않은 것이 여전히 감각될 수 있다면, 부재는 그 자체로 존재임을 밝힌다.
A presence does not disappear entirely even after leaving the time and place it once inhabited. Some things remain as memories, while others persist as inexplicable sensations, lingering within us even after losing their tangible form. This work focuses on the indeterminate state between presence and absence, and on the emotions that continue along that boundary.
The mass that evokes a human figure and the elongated form resembling a part of the body do not define any specific subject. They are at once a single body and something detached from it, revealing an ambiguous state between what is alive and what has already disappeared. Different times and emotions intertwine within these forms, making it impossible to distinguish where something begins or ends, or what remains wholly intact.
The absence of someone creates another form of presence for those left behind. A person who can no longer be encountered is continually transformed through memory and emotion, while unresolved feelings persist, moving between past and present. Mourning is both a process of accepting absence and a period in which the relationship between absence and presence continues in another form. Within it exist not only loss, but also the inability to let go and the emotional remnants that do not vanish even after someone is gone.
Remnants of Presence explores the relationships between what has disappeared and what remains, between what has ended and what continues. These are things that linger somewhere, neither entirely extinguished nor fully restored. Within this incomplete continuity, presence takes on another form, and memory acquires new vitality. If what is no longer visible can still be felt, then absence reveals itself as a form of presence in its own right.
