2016년부터 만든 ‘Twisting’ 작품 시리즈는 나무를 휘어, Tension 장력(張力)이 조각의 형태를 빚도록 함으로써, 눈에 보이지 않는 장력의 힘을 눈에 보이게 만든다. 이렇게 탄생한 형태는 역동적이며, 바라보는 각도마다 새로운 모습으로 변화한다.
Tension은 우리가 살고 있는 자연, 유기물과 물리적 세계의 많은 형태(form)를 빚어내는 힘이다. 예를 들어 DNA의 상징적인 나선 구조는 분자 구조 안에 담긴 장력에서 비롯된다. 자연 세계의 많은 형태와 모양새에 작용하는 힘을 직접 사용해서 작품을 만듦으로써, 작가는 시대를 초월한 시각 언어로 말하는 조각을 만들고자 한다. 작품은 원목 베니어(veneer) 널빤지를 한 장씩 쌓아서 붙인 뒤, 형태를 다듬는 건식벤딩(bent-lamination)의 전통 목공 기법으로 제작되었다.
The Twisting series, which the artist began in 2016, explores how tension can shape sculptural forms by bending wood, making the invisible forces of tension visible. The resulting forms are dynamic, revealing new appearances when viewed from different angles.
Tension is a force that shapes many forms in nature, organic matter, and the physical world around us. For example, the iconic double-helix structure of DNA arises from forces of tension within its molecular structure. By directly harnessing the forces that shape forms and structures in the natural world, the artist seeks to create sculptures that communicate through a timeless visual language. The works are created using the traditional woodworking technique of bent lamination, in which thin sheets of wood veneer are layered and bonded together, then shaped to achieve the desired form.
