손태선 《Burning Series》

《Burning Series》

Son Taeseon, Burning Series

Burning Series captures the time accumulated within the material, from the moment fire consumed and charred the wood to its present state, in which it quietly emits light in the darkness.

Fire has a dual nature. Although it can threaten and damage wood, when carefully applied, it can also make the material more durable. Light, in the form of illumination, does more than simply brighten a space; it takes the place of the fire that once burned and transformed the wood.

The forms of the works are abstract interpretations of images encountered in nature. Their slender, elongated shapes may evoke a moment of rapid movement or suggest parts of a living organism. Rather than directly reproducing forms found in nature, I sought to express their distinctive characteristics and impressions through abstraction.

My approach to light reflects this same attitude. I was more concerned with how much light could be concealed than with how brightly it could be revealed. The faint light escaping through the cracks gains a stronger presence through its contrast with the darkness. By limiting the direct exposure of light, I sought to make the openings themselves more perceptible in the dark. Using charring and cracking as integral sculptural elements, I aimed to express the coexistence of destruction and creation through the transformation of wood and the contrast between light and darkness.
