형태가 완성됨에 있어서 완벽한 예측만이 있을 수는 없다. 모든 것을 미리 결정하고 그 결과를 향해 나아가는 과정에서는 가능성이 개입할 여지가 없을 것이다. 오히려 예측하지 못한 것이 발생하고, 그것을 받아들이는 순간 나는 새로운 방향으로 움직이기 시작한다.
중요한 것은 우연 그 자체가 아니다. 그런 사태가 발생할 수 있음을 받아들이는 태도이다. 우연은 의지를 반대편에 존재하는 것이 아니라, 의지가 작동하는 또 다른 조건이 되는 것이다. 이 작업은 예측 불가능함이 발생했을 때 그것을 제거하거나 원래의 계획으로 되돌아가는 대신, 그 안에서 새로운 가능성을 발견하고 다시 선택하는 과정 위에 있다.
하나의 선택은 또 다른 판단을 만들어 새로운 결정을 요구한다. 그렇게 형태는 미리 정해진 하나의 목적지를 향해 나아가기보다 그 다음 움직임을 만들어내는 순간의 생동으로 생성된다.
작업에서 반복적으로 등장하는 구는 이러한 생각을 담은 하나의 단위이다. 하나의 지점, 하나의 순간을 가장 작은 단위로 붙잡고자 했다. 수없이 많은 움직임이 한 지점에 응축된 상태로 다가온다. 구는 완결된 형태처럼 보이지만 시작과 끝이 없고 중심만 있을 뿐이다. 이 안에는 완결되기 이전의 수많은 선택과 우연들이 존재한다.
앞서 말했듯이 완성이라는 것이 모든 것을 통제한 상태라고 생각하지 않는다. 오히려 그것이란 통제할 수 없는 것과 내가 의도한 것이 함께 존재할 수 있는 상태의 반복에 가깝다. 나는 계속해서 그 지점을 향해 움직이지만 그것은 미리 정해진 모습이 아니다. 끊임없이 변화하는 조건 속에서 선택하고, 바라보고, 다시 선택하는 과정 속에서 잠시 도달하는 순간의 상태이다.
A form can never be completed through perfect prediction alone. If everything were determined in advance and the process moved only toward a predetermined result, there would be no room for possibility to intervene. Rather, it is when something unexpected occurs, and when I accept it, that I begin to move in a new direction.
What matters is not chance itself, but the attitude of accepting that such events can occur. Chance does not exist in opposition to intention; rather, it becomes another condition through which intention operates. This work is grounded in a process of discovering new possibilities and choosing again within unpredictability, instead of eliminating it or returning to the original plan when it arises.
One choice leads to another judgment and calls for a new decision. In this way, form does not move toward a single predetermined destination. Instead, it comes into being through the vitality of each moment that generates the next movement.
The sphere, which appears repeatedly in my work, is a unit that embodies this idea. I wanted to grasp a single point, a single moment, in its smallest possible form. It feels as though countless movements have been condensed into one point. The sphere may appear complete, yet it has neither beginning nor end, only a center. Within it exist countless choices and accidents that precede completion.
As mentioned earlier, I do not think of completion as a state in which everything has been brought under control. Rather, it is closer to a repeated condition in which what I cannot control and what I intend are able to coexist. I continue to move toward that point, but it has no predetermined appearance. It is a temporary state reached through the ongoing process of choosing, observing, and choosing again within constantly changing conditions.
