Ryu Jeongha, The Spine of What Remains

What we leave behind after eating,
what we leave behind after building,
what we leave behind after desperately wishing.

Even when a form disappears, the structure that once sustained it often remains. Bones remain where the body has vanished; columns and grids lie hidden within a building; and someone’s earnest wish survives in the traces of folded paper. I have long been interested in such things—structures that lie at the center of an existence yet usually remain unseen, revealing themselves only after their original function has come to an end.

In this body of work, I push this sense of the bone beyond the boundaries of the body. Animal bones left after a meal, paper cranes folded again and again, and monumental structures struggling to stand on their own differ in material and origin, yet strangely assume similar gestures. One leans against another, connects to it, or hangs from it, barely maintaining a single form. Rather than making something that resembles bone, I seek to construct structures that resemble the way bones exist.

Here, weight does not necessarily correspond to physical mass. Fired clay becomes a remnant of what once supported flesh, while the lightest paper, repeatedly folded and layered, becomes a spine. The wings of cranes made to fly push against one another like protruding bones, while bodies that once held wishes are joined together and suspended in the air. What is heavy becomes light, and what is light, in turn, becomes a skeleton.

What I ultimately look toward is not the completed form itself, but the force that endures within it, allowing the form to exist. Within the body, it becomes bone; within space, a column or a grid; at times, it exists without material form at all, like memory or longing. In this way, invisible things temporarily assume visible form by borrowing different bodies.

To support something may not mean standing perfectly on one’s own, but rather continually entering into relationships with other things in order not to collapse. Things that touch one another yet never fully become one. In the space between them, form briefly learns how to stand.
