흙은 그 자체로 무게와 저항, 불안정함을 품은 물질이다. 통제할 수 없음은 오히려 새로운 가능성을 엿보게 한다. 흙을 밀고 세우기를 반복하는 동안, 중력과 습도, 그리고 나의 개입이 동시에 형태와 표면에 새겨진다.
형태는 과정의 산물일 뿐이다. 나는 매 순간 물질이 지시하는 방향을 감각하는 데 마음을 두기로 한다. 존재가 이미 품고 있으나 아직 드러나지 않은 잠재성은 어떤 순간, 어떤 조건과 만나느냐에 따라 다르게 생성된다. 자연물이 저마다의 환경 속에서 움트고 피어나듯이. 나는 그 순간들이 지시하는 형상을 좇는다.
내 작업은 무엇을 말하고자 했다기보다, 그렇게 대상과 나 사이에서 계속된 물음 속에서 가까스로 쥐어지는 단편들이다. 이는 대상을 통해 체험하는 잠재성의 탐색이자, 그 현실화 속에서 선명해지는 자기 감각이다.
평평한 표면 아래 아직 드러나지 않은 것들이 서서히 밀고 올라와 부풀고, 마침내 뚫고 나온다. 또 작은 흙의 파편들이 서로의 무게와 방향에 기대며 뒤틀리고 열려간다. 그렇게 조응하고 저항하며 지어진 몸체는 세계를 향한 손짓이다.
Clay is a material that inherently carries weight, resistance, and instability. Its very uncontrollability, however, opens onto new possibilities. As I repeatedly push and raise the clay, gravity, humidity, and my own intervention are inscribed simultaneously into its form and surface.
Form is merely the outcome of a process. At each moment, I choose instead to attend to the direction indicated by the material itself. A potentiality already held within a being, yet not fully revealed, takes shape differently depending on the moment and the conditions it encounters—just as things in nature sprout and bloom according to their particular environments. I follow the forms suggested by those moments.
Rather than attempting to convey a predetermined message, my works are fragments that I manage to grasp through an ongoing exchange of questions between the object and myself. They are an exploration of potentiality experienced through the object, and at the same time, a heightened sense of self that becomes clearer through the realization of that potential.
Beneath a flat surface, something not yet visible slowly presses upward, swelling until it finally breaks through. Elsewhere, small fragments of clay lean into one another’s weight and direction, twisting and opening outward. Built through this interplay of response and resistance, the resulting body becomes a gesture toward the world.
