<매핵기> 시리즈는 목 안에서 느껴지는 매실 씨를 닮은 이물감, 매핵기(梅核氣)의 경험에서 출발한다.
삼키려 해도 삼켜지지 않고 뱉으려 해도 뱉어지지 않는 이 감각은, 물리적으로는 아무것도 존재하지 않음에도 분명한 덩어리로 감지되었다. 이물질이 없다는 사실을 인지한 뒤에도 감각은 지속되었으며, 나는 그것의 기준과 경계가 어디에 있는지 질문하게 되었다.
작품은 도자와 왁스라는 상반된 물성의 재료가 결합하여, 모호한 윤곽의 형상으로 드러난다. 소성을 거쳐 단단히 고정되는 도자와 열에 녹아 변형되는 왁스의 관계는, 눈에 보이는 물질과 감각으로만 존재하는 이물감이 공존하며 결합하는 긴장을 내포한다.
이러한 작업에서 에이도스(Eidos)는 보이는 것과 존재하는 것 사이의 간극에서, 감각과 물질이 만나 형상을 만들어내는 지점으로 이해된다. 또, 나에게 이 개념은 물질에 앞서 존재하는 완결된 본질이라기보다, 몸이 감각을 경험하고 물질과 만나며 그것을 해석하는 과정에서 관계적으로 생겨나는 형상에 가깝다. 즉, 손이 흙과 왁스를 누르고 만지는 과정에서 재료가 예상과 다르게 반응할 때, 나는 그 물질과 조응하며 형상이 드러나는 것으로 바라본다.
이러한 사유를 토대로 <매실 씨앗>은 추상이 감각과 물질의 경험으로부터 어떻게 발생하는지, 그리고 보이지 않는 감각이 어떤 방식으로 윤곽을 얻는지 묻는다.
The Maehakgi series originates from the artist’s experience of maehakgi (梅核氣), or globus sensation, a feeling as though a plum pit were lodged in the throat.
Neither swallowable nor expellable, this sensation was perceived as a distinct mass despite the absence of any physical object. Even after recognizing that there was nothing actually lodged in the throat, the sensation persisted, leading me to question where its boundaries and criteria might lie.
The work takes form through the combination of two materials with contrasting physical properties: ceramic and wax. Ceramic is hardened and fixed through firing, while wax melts and transforms under heat. Their relationship contains a tension between visible materiality and an invisible sensation of foreignness that exists only through bodily perception, allowing the two to coexist within an ambiguous form.
Within this practice, Eidos is understood as a point at which sensation and material meet to generate form, emerging in the gap between what is visible and what exists. For me, Eidos is not a complete essence that precedes matter, but rather a form that arises relationally through the process of bodily sensation, encounters with material, and interpretation. When clay and wax respond unexpectedly as my hands press and manipulate them, I understand form as something that reveals itself through my interaction and correspondence with the material.
Based on this line of thought, Plum Seed asks how abstraction can emerge from experiences of sensation and material, and how an invisible sensation can come to acquire a perceptible contour.
