I cannot see in your face only what I wish to see. And so, what exists here is not complicity, but alterity. “The way in which the Other appears, beyond the idea of the Other within me—we call this the face.” …… / Shin Hyung-chul, A Community of Feeling, p. 230
Plato’s concept of eidos derives from the Greek verb eido, meaning “to see with the eyes,” and may be translated as appearance, outward form, shape, or figure. Etymologically, then, it refers to the form of an object made visible through light. Within the Western philosophical tradition, where vision has often been regarded as the sense closest to truth, eidos can be understood as an essence capable of being clearly apprehended.
There have been moments when I closed both eyes and tried to focus on sensations rising from the deepest part of myself. What emerged was not so much the faces of countless others who had passed through my life, fixed as individual afterimages, but rather the vibrations of two hearts felt through skin pressed against skin; the warmth of someone whose hand, on a winter day, was warmer than my own; and the subtlety of something nonverbal that could be sensed even without the explicit words, “I care for you.” Whenever something seized and unsettled my heart, I came to realize that such memories had always warmed my body, like blood beginning to flow from its deepest interior.
These bodily memories allowed me to encounter the face of myself I had tried to forget within the fragile face that continually breaks into the illusion of wholeness. The eyes and hands of others—and the vision presupposed by them—became my own eyes, my two lips, and my spine, embracing and gradually transforming the existing structure of my body.
Just as the deepest part of the female body, metaphorically figured as two lips, already enfolds and protects a vulnerable center of sensation, I feel that my own way of seeing others also mingles with their faces and remains within me like an instinct whose origin can no longer be traced. Following the memory of two bodies pressed closely together, the forms born in darkness were faces like clots of blood occupying that narrow crevice. Our fingertips, which had caressed even sorrowful surfaces as though they were twins, were pointing precisely toward the face of mine that I had once found unbearable to hate.
When I read my own limits and my love for another in someone else’s vulnerability, and when I recognize your eyes emerging within my own face, an eidos that began in the unseen enters into another form of eidos: a face illuminated by the light of salvation.
