김지원(1985~)
작품의 형태는 용접할 때 맺히는 미세한 금속 입자를 하나씩 결합하는 방식에서 비롯된다. 처음부터 완성된 윤곽을 정해두기보다 재료가 열에 반응하는 양상과 손끝의 판단에 따라 방향이 달라지고, 제작자의 통제와 예측할 수 없는 변화는 한 표면에 함께 새겨진다. 오랜 제작 과정은 별도의 설명 없이도 묵직한 무게와 촘촘한 조직으로 모습을 드러낸다. 작은 입자들이 서로 기대어 전체를 이루는 모습은 개별적인 것들이 관계 속에서 질서를 얻는 원리와 닮았다. 김지원에게 작업이란 정해진 결과를 구현하는 일이 아니라, 금속과 주고받는 반응 속에서 예정되지 않았던 형상을 찾아가는 과정에 가깝다.
Each form takes shape by joining, one by one, minute beads of metal formed during welding. Rather than adhering to a predetermined outline, it develops in response to the material’s reaction to heat and the judgments of the artist’s hand, allowing control and unforeseen change to become inscribed on the same surface. The prolonged process of making becomes perceptible, without explanation, through the work’s substantial weight and densely articulated structure. The way individual particles support one another to become a whole recalls how distinct entities find order through their relationships. For Kim, making is not the realization of a fixed result but a process of discovering unanticipated forms through an ongoing exchange with metal.
