녹아내린 금속의 잔여물은 점으로 이어지면서 사물의 언어를 모색한다. 어떤 형태도 되지 못한 금속은 녹고 다시 굳어지며 서서히 구조를 형성한다. 상처의 표면은 좀처럼 아물지 못하고 때로는 기능성 도구로 혹은 무딘 조형의 덩어리로 변주한다. 꼬이고 늘어진 선 반복된 결들의 구조는 사물과 조형의 경계에서 불안한 몸을 지탱하고 여러 갈래의 길을 모색하고 있다. 존재한다는 이유로 생각하고, 믿고, 느낀다.
김지원이 선택한 작은 쇳물 단위들은 작업 과정에서 발생하는 물질적 사건에 휘말린다. 작가의 손과 집념은 사유를 응축하고 그 흔적을 남긴다. 쇠똥이라 불리는 보잘 것 없는 것들이 반복과 연결, 중첩과 축적으로 형성한 구조는 서서히 작품이라는 이름을 새긴다. 그의 작업은 무엇을 만들 것인가를 떠나 어떤 방식으로 시간을 축적할 것인가에 무게를 두었다. 피조물이 탄생하는 데는 필연의 시간을 수반한다. 금속을 녹이고 이어가는 반복적인 행위에서 점철된 구조물들은 삶과 작업이 분리되지 않은 하나의 다큐멘터리로 기록된다.
김지원 조각가의 작품은 생산성과 효율성을 추앙하는 현대의 물질문명에 반기까지는 아니어도 수용을 거부하겠다는 의지가 농후하다. 가치 체계 속에서 시간과 노동이 어떻게 물질로 남고 의미를 획득하는지를 보여주며 조형 의식 이전에 태도를 먼저 소환한다. 그것은 결국 한 언어의 형태를 조각하는 것으로 종결된다. 그것은 결코 쾌락이 될 수 없는, 슬픔의 애무이자 교리로 남는다.

Residues of molten metal connect point by point, searching for a language of objects. Metal that has yet to assume any form melts and solidifies once again, gradually forming a structure. Its wounded surfaces never quite heal, transforming at times into functional objects and at others into blunt sculptural masses. Structures composed of twisted, elongated lines and repeated textures sustain a precarious body at the boundary between object and sculpture, seeking paths that branch in multiple directions. By virtue of its existence, it thinks, believes, and feels.
The small beads of molten metal selected by Jiwon Kim become entangled in the material events that arise during the making process. The artist’s hand and tenacity condense thought, leaving its traces behind. Those seemingly insignificant fragments—what the artist calls “iron droppings”—are repeated and connected, layered and accumulated into structures that gradually earn the name of art. Rather than focusing on what to make, Kim’s practice places greater weight on how time might be accumulated. Every creation necessarily demands time to come into being. Formed through repeated acts of melting and joining metal, these structures become a documentary record in which life and artistic practice are inseparable.
Jiwon Kim’s sculpture may not go so far as to raise a banner of revolt against modern material civilization and its veneration of productivity and efficiency, yet it embodies a resolute refusal to accept its terms. By revealing how time and labor remain embedded in matter and acquire meaning within a system of value, the work foregrounds an attitude that precedes formal intention. Ultimately, it culminates in sculpting the shape of a language. What remains is a caress of sorrow and a doctrine—one that can never become pleasure.
