한진섭(1956~)


한진섭은 반세기 가까이 돌을 다루며 구상과 추상의 경계에서 독자적인 조형 언어를 구축해왔다. 그에게 돌은 정해진 형상을 새겨 넣는 수동적 재료가 아니라 고유한 결·색·무게와 시간의 흔적을 품은 존재다. 그는 자연석의 생김새와 물성을 관찰하며 그 안에 잠재된 형상을 최소한의 개입으로 드러낸다. 단순한 덩어리와 응축된 구조, 둥근 곡선, 거친 면과 매끄러운 면의 대비는 돌의 육중함을 유지하면서도 부드럽고 온화한 인상을 형성한다. 이러한 조형 감각은 한국의 석불과 돌장승, 돌탑에서 발견되는 소박하고 담백한 미감과 맞닿아 있다.

작업의 중심에는 인간에 대한 지속적인 관심이 놓여 있다. 가족과 이웃, 동물들은 단순화된 비례와 익살스러운 표정 속에서 서로 기대고 마주하며 관계를 이룬다. 그 안에 담긴 해학은 대상을 희화화하기보다 인간과 동물, 사물 사이의 위계를 낮추고 공존의 가능성을 보여준다. 또한 자연석을 쌓거나 결합하고, 움직이는 조각과 관람자가 직접 앉고 만질 수 있는 의자와 벤치를 제작함으로써 조각을 일상의 공간과 신체가 만나는 관계적 존재로 확장한다.

종교조각에서는 절제된 형태와 돌의 영속성을 바탕으로 인간의 믿음과 기원을 담아내왔으며, 그 흐름 속에서 2023년 바티칸 성 베드로 대성전 외벽에 ‘성 김대건 안드레아 신부’ 성상의 제작을 맡았다. 김대건 신부는 한국 최초의 가톨릭 사제이자 순교 성인으로, 이 성상은 성 베드로 대성전에 설치된 최초의 한국 성인상이자 아시아 성인의 성상으로도 첫 사례이다. 이는 한진섭의 오랜 석조 경력과 한국적 조형 언어가 집약된 기념비적 작업이라 할 수 있다.

For nearly five decades, Han Jin-sub has developed a distinctive sculptural language between figuration and abstraction. He approaches stone not as a passive material, but as a substance bearing its own grain, color, weight, and history. Through minimal intervention, he draws out forms already suggested by the stone itself. Compact masses, rounded contours, and contrasts between rough and polished surfaces retain the material’s weight while creating a calm, gentle presence. This sensibility is closely connected to the restrained beauty of Korean stone Buddhas, jangseung figures, and stone cairns.

Human relationships remain central to Han’s practice. Families, neighbors, and animals meet through simplified proportions and playful expressions, forming scenes of warmth and coexistence. His humor does not ridicule its subjects, but softens the boundaries between people, animals, and objects. By assembling natural stones and creating movable sculptures, chairs, and benches that viewers may touch or use, he also brings sculpture into direct contact with everyday space and the human body.

In 2023, Han created the Statue of Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon for an exterior niche of St. Peter’s Basilica. As the first statue of a Korean saint and the first of an Asian saint installed there, the work represents a major culmination of his long engagement with stone and Korean sculptural tradition.
