Absolute Form Toward Abstraction

“To see” is both evidence of truth and the basis of a thing’s identity. Human beings judge, understand, and define through what they see. What, then, is the fundamental form that makes something what it is? Where does the essence of form reside—the essence that allows innumerable particulars to be defined as a single “something”?

Eidos is a concept that arose within the charged philosophical space between what is seen and what exists. What is seen is a particular phenomenon apprehended by the senses, while what exists is its phenomenal essence grasped through reason. Eidos emerges when, rather than stopping at a phenomenal understanding of an object’s color, size, and shape, we seek to determine what that object is. Within the relationship between matter (hyle) and form (morphe/eidos), eidos gives rise to both the material itself and the form latent within it.

The seven ceramic artists participating in this exhibition take clay as a generative material, infusing their streams of consciousness into the dignity of the forms it can bear. What emerges is not mere shape, but a structure and principle of existence. It is an intuition of the spirit made meaningful through organic relationships among the human body, sculptural form, and object. It may be understood as the emergence of a narrative that seeks, through the materiality of clay, to draw a shared experience from the interplay of individual experiences.

The seven artists at the heart of this exhibition have discerned within their works the transcendent phenomena and structures that lie beyond objects, the essential structures of psychological states grasped through experience, and the grounds of existence revealed through such perceptions. They delve into the tensions between phenomenon and essence, particular and universal, sense and reason, identity and difference, and change and permanence.

Ultimately, eidos is the power to render the invisible visible. The works reach formal completion as the sensory vibrations and images of memory embedded in the artists’ minds reconstitute an inner order through form. Attuning the sensibility of the hand to the forces through which particles and masses of clay cohere and push outward, the artists ultimately come to venerate eidos in visible form.

The exhibition is an unprecedented site where particles of clay gestate bodies, sculpt faces, bring forth bones, enact layers of matter, and extract evidence of mourning—guiding us from the visible toward the invisible and, ultimately, toward an encounter with sculpture’s innermost truth.
