표지 선정 & 건축물(블루젤로) 소개

2026년 2월호(537호)에 스페이스 톤이 표지로 선정되면서, 건축물의 당호(堂號) ‘블루젤로(bluegelo)’에 대한 이야기가 소개되었습니다.
설계 협의를 하던 2022년 8월은 코로나 팬데믹의 영향으로 사람들이 심리적으로 침체된 시기였다. 그래서인지 자연스레 디자인 구상 단계에서 ‘치유와 극복’이라는 요소가 잠재되어 있었다. 건축물의 매스는 치유의 영향력을 갖는 로마 산탄젤로의 원형(Round)을 떠올렸고, 여기에 건물의 외장 색인 블루(Blue)를 더해 건축물의 당호(堂號)를 자연스럽게 만들 수 있었다. 이것이 바로 합정동 블루젤로(Bluegelo, Blue+Santangelo)의 탄생이다.
건축물의 그리드 체계는 원형과 내접하는 사각형 구조의 겹침이다. 이곳 주변은 일조권의 영향을 받는 일반주거지역으로, 기존 대지는 정형화된 각단형(角段形) 건축물들 사이에서 힘들게 숨 쉬고 있었다. 건축주는 획일화된 군집 형상들에서 탈피하자는 건축가의 설계 의도에 동의했다. 이는 ‘탈영토화’로 원형 매스에 대한 결정이기도 했다. 사각의 집단 속에서 형태의 반복과 지루함을 회피하고, 시선을 환기하고 지역을 활성화하는 ‘차이의 생성’ 요소로서의 원형 건축의 위상이 설정된 것이다.
국적을 불문하고 모든 조각가들을 아우르는 허브이자 조각 전문 갤러리인 이곳은 스페이스 톤(SPACE TONE)이라는 이름을 갖는다. <블루젤로>는 국내 최초의 조각 전문 갤러리의 산실이자, 건축물 자체가 조각이기도 하다.
이 건축물은 지역 재생의 씨앗이 되어 지역에 선한 영향력이 발휘될 수 있도록 계획되었다. 조각을 전시하는 기능과 건축물 자체의 조각성 구현으로 건축에서 회자되는 다음 언표의 실험을 이룰 것이다. “사람이 땅 위에 건축물을 만들고 그 건축물이 그 지역과 사람들을 변화시키며 치유한다.”

In August 2022, when design discussions were underway, the COVID-19 pandemic had left many people psychologically subdued. Perhaps for that reason, the idea of “healing and overcoming” lay latent in the design concept from the outset. The building’s mass took inspiration from the round form of Rome’s Castel Sant’Angelo, known for its associations with healing, and by adding Blue, the color of the exterior cladding, the building’s name could be formed naturally. This is the origin of Bluegelo (Blue + Santangelo) in Hapjeong-dong.
The building’s grid system is an overlap of a circle and an inscribed square structure. The surrounding area is a general residential district affected by daylight regulations, and the existing site had been struggling to breathe among standardized buildings. The client agreed with the architect’s intention to move beyond repetitive massing. This also became a decision to adopt a circular mass as an act of ‘deterritorialization’. Amid a square collective, the circular architecture was positioned as an element of “the generation of difference” that avoids repetition and tedium of form, refreshes the gaze, and revitalizes the neighborhood.
This place, a sculpture-focused gallery and a hub that embraces sculptors of all nationalities, bears the name SPACE TONE. is both the birthplace of Korea’s first sculpture-specialized gallery and, in itself, a sculptural object.
This building was planned to become a seed of local regeneration, enabling a positive influence on the area. Through its function as a space for exhibiting sculpture and through the realization of the building’s own sculptural quality, it will carry out an experiment in the following oft-cited proposition in architecture: “People create buildings on the land, and those buildings change and heal the place and the people.”
